2016 Mazda CX-9 Test Drive: Spacious and Fun

2016 Mazda CX-9 test driveNews writer Gary Gastelu wrote an article in September detailing his 2016 Mazda CX-9 test drive, where he acknowledges that the CX-9 is a “three-row Miata,” offering “a bright spot of fun” in the mid-size crossover segment.

This seems to be the general consensus about the all-new CX-9. Its rating on Car and Driver is 5 stars, which is pretty amazing, and C&D’s first drive review of the CX-9 praised its ability to maintain functionality and interior space while offering the most stylish and elegant vehicle in its class.

Car and Driver says the CX-9 looks like a luxury vehicle, putting luxury cars in its segment like the Infiniti QX60 to shame, and its interior uses the finest materials, with plastics so soft they feel like leather. Optional all-wheel drive and standard features like LED headlights, a backup camera, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Mazda Connect make the CX-9 one of the most feature-complete SUVs on the market.

The Mazda CX-9 sports a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine where most in its segment have a V6, giving it 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm, which Mazda says is where owners driving crossovers usually stay at anyway, so there isn’t a need for a more powerful V6 engine at 4500 rpm.

Finally, the CX-9 has class-leading fuel economy, with max highway mpg at 28. Mazda has even included a cooler that helps cool the engine without using additional fuel, making it the most innovative crossover on the market in terms of improving efficiency.

In many ways the CX-9 offers the very best in its class, so come to Sierra Mazda and take it for a test drive today!
