Japanese road rally

Earlier this month, Mazda and the Japanese Nostalgic Car magazine teamed up to present the only all-Japanese road rally in the United States called Touge California. On April 2nd, 28 rare and original Japanese cars from the 1960s, ‘70s, and early ‘80s went on a 200-mile journey along the California coast.

The rally began in San Diego and ended at Mazda’s headquarters in Irvine. There, participants got to experience a unique tour of Mazda’s private collection of more than 50 race cars, concepts, and other vehicles. This collection is not open to the public.

Of the 28 cars, 11 of them were Mazdas, including a 1975 Rotary-Engine Pickup, a 1978 GLC compact hatchback, and a 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE from Mazda’s own collection.

“We are proud to have Mazda, a company that understands the importance of heritage and motoring thrills, as a partner for our Touge California rally,” said Ben Hsu, editor-in-chief of Japanese Nostalgic Car, in a statement“As 70 percent of Japan’s terrain is mountainous, our goal with Touge California is to give owners of Japanese cars the experience of driving on roads similar to those on which their cars were born.”

Do you know anyone here in California who participated in this unique road rally? Maybe Mazda will make this an annual event for Japanese car lovers every year.
